Simple Ways to Live Happier

Introduction

Happiness is something many of us naturally strive for. When we feel happier, it can positively influence our energy, relationships, health, work, and creativity, shaping not only how we experience life but also how we contribute to the people and environments around us.

The positive information is that happiness is not fixed. It can be supported through small, intentional actions in our daily lives. By understanding what contributes to well-being and making consistent adjustments, we can gradually build a more balanced and fulfilling life.

Let’s explore practical ways we can cultivate greater happiness and well-being together.

What Is Happiness?

The concept of happiness may differ from person to person and among various cultures. In general, the concept of happiness is often associated with luck, positive emotions, a state of contentment, joy, pleasure, and well-being. The term also encompasses the idea of life's satisfaction or a sense of one's fulfilling life. [1]

To define the term "happiness" in a more practical sense, it is viewed as whole-person well-being. Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar, an internationally renowned teacher in the field of happiness and leadership, elaborates it as a complex and multifaceted construct, encompassing the following essential dimensions. [2]

  • Spiritual Well-Being
  • Intellectual Well-Being
  • Physical Well-Being
  • Rational Well-Being
  • Emotional Well-Being

Why Does Happiness Matter?

Happiness is associated with meaningful benefits that can enhance our overall well-being and support our ability to function effectively in daily life. Importantly, it is not something limited to specific situations or environments—we can carry it with us wherever we go, whether at home, at work, while traveling, or spending time with friends and family. Often, even small actions, such as offering a smile or showing kindness toward others, can be the starting point.

When we cultivate happiness, we tend to create positive effects that extend beyond ourselves, influencing our relationships, communities, and workplaces in constructive ways. These effects often arise from simple, low-cost practices that we can integrate into our everyday lives.

With this notion in mind, we can begin to explore the benefits of happiness and recognize the value of prioritizing it in our daily lives starting today.

Below are 12 reasons why happiness matters in our lives.

Lower Stress

Numerous studies have demonstrated that individuals who experience higher levels of happiness tend to exhibit consistently reduced levels of the stress hormone cortisol [3][4], improved hemodynamic recovery [5], and a more rapid recovery following stressful situations [6].

Resilience

Studies across multiple fields suggest that happiness and positive emotions play an effective role in coping with difficult or challenging life situations [7][8][9]. In one study, for example, students who reported higher levels of happiness utilized humor and derived valuable life lessons from similar challenging experiences, in contrast to their less happy counterparts who faced the same situations [10]. This suggests the ability to maintain a positive outlook and hope can be particularly beneficial during challenging periods, leading to favorable results.

A Stronger Immune System

Research consistently found that individuals who are particularly positive were likely to have a better immune response [11][12] and were less likely to catch colds [13].

Increased Life Longevity

A vast array of empirical evidence agrees on the connection between happiness and life longevity [14][15][16]. A 2008 meta-analysis, which synthesized findings from various studies on health and happiness, revealed a significant correlation between positive emotions and lower cardiovascular mortality rates in healthy populations. The study also pointed out that positive emotions lower the risk of death in people with renal failure and human immunodeficiency virus infection [17].

Overall Healthy Lifestyle

Happiness is associated with numerous beneficial health practices that contribute to improved overall well-being. [18]These behaviors encompass adopting a healthier diet [19][20][21]; increasing physical activity levels [22]; self-control over impulse and addiction, such as smoking withdrawal [23][24]; and addressing inadequate sleep patterns [25][26].

Higher Performance

Research on happiness and performance demonstrates a significant relationship between happiness and enhanced academic and job performance [27][28][29]. For example, the result of the study of Lester and his associates in 2022, tracking nearly one million U.S. Army soldiers over a span of almost five years, revealed that those soldiers who reported high levels of positive emotions and optimism were subsequently given service awards based on their job performance [30]. Notably, merely 12% of participants were honored with any form of army award (i.e., heroism awards, service awards for performance, and service awards for participation) over the five-year duration of the study [31].

Better Decision-Making

Numerous studies have indicated that individuals who experience happiness tend to make decisions more rapidly [32], exhibit less inclination towards risky behaviors [32][33], and select a satisfactory option [34]. A study conducted by Bubić and Erceg in 2018, moreover, pointed out that individuals who are able to optimize both present and future focus tend to attain meaning, enjoyment, and personal growth in their lives [35].

Improved Productivity

The number of studies demonstrates the connection between happiness and productivity [36][37][38][39]. The experimental studies conducted by Sgroi and colleagues in 2015 revealed that individuals exhibiting higher levels of happiness demonstrated approximately 12 percentage points higher productivity than those in the control group. However, individuals with lower levels of happiness consistently show reduced productivity [39].

Greater Creativity

A meta-analysis covering 25 years of research on the connection between mood and creativity reveals that positive emotions, particularly happiness, significantly boost creativity. The study indicates that negative emotions, including anxiety and fear, are likely to hinder creativity. In contrast, positive feelings can enhance creativity, particularly when tasks in experimental settings are presented as enjoyable and intrinsically rewarding [40].

Likable Person

Research from both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies has validated the connection between happiness and the presence of supportive friends and dependable companions [41][42][43]. In the workplace, employees who demonstrate a pronounced inclination towards positive emotions are more likely to receive tangible support from their peers and supervisors [43].

Love and Joyful Marriage

Happiness leads to marriage and high-quality relationships. Several longitudinal studies carried out in Australia, Germany, and the United States have demonstrated that unmarried individuals who report high levels of life satisfaction, along with positive emotions and happiness, are more inclined to enter into marriage at a later stage [44][45][46]. Research also consistently indicates that participants who report higher levels of positive emotions, such as companionship, happiness, love, and safety, to their partners are more likely to experience marital happiness and romantic relationships compared to their less happy counterparts [47][48][49][50][51][52].

Uplifting Energy in the Surroundings

Happiness is contagious. That means happiness, as a positive emotion, can be transmitted from one individual to another through three degrees of separation, such as to the friends of a person's friends' friends. The longitudinal study, following 4,739 individuals from 1983 to 2003, revealed that a friend residing within a mile who experiences happiness can boost another person's likelihood of feeling happy by 25%. This phenomenon is also evident among cohabiting partners, nearby siblings, and neighbors [53]. The results of the longitudinal research conducted by Chi and his colleagues, which analyzed Chinese family panel data from 2010 and 2014, similarly showed that the happiness and positive emotions of one family member were able to be widely passed on among all family members [54].

How to Become Happier

Happiness is attainable for all individuals. Here is the way to become happier

Happiness can arise naturally, yet it is sometimes more challenging to achieve and maintain than many people expect. The encouraging aspect is that greater happiness can be cultivated through small, consistent efforts and positive daily practices. By following the practical guide below, we can explore useful strategies and gradually apply them in our daily lives to support long-term well-being.

Happiness Enhancers

It is a fact that we cannot avoid difficult experiences such as illness, rejection, or failure. These experiences often bring sadness, disappointment, and emotional pain. However, the blessing is that happiness can still be experienced even during challenging times. Happiness is present in many aspects of life and often emerges through our feelings, thoughts, and actions [55].

The following exercises help us create more opportunities for happiness in our everyday lives, even in the face of difficulty.

Engage in Meaningful Activities.

Participating in one or two meaningful activities can bring moments of joy and help rekindle a sense of purpose, even during challenging times. What activities bring you happiness? Take a moment to identify three to five activities that you genuinely enjoy and consider how you can incorporate them more regularly into your daily life [56]. Examples may include the following:

  • Spending quality time with friends or family
  • Reading a good book
  • Volunteering and helping others

Practice Gratitude at Work

Acknowledge the positive qualities of the people and the work we engage with. When we intentionally look for the best in our work, clients, and coworkers, we not only help create a more positive work environment but also develop greater understanding and appreciation for them. This can strengthen working relationships and make collaboration more effective, enjoyable, and rewarding [57].

One way to cultivate greater appreciation at work is to regularly reflect on the people, experiences, and opportunities that contribute positively to our working lives [57]. The following are some actions we can take:

  • Write a letter of gratitude to clients or coworkers who have made a positive difference in our lives.
  • Reflect on which tasks have made us feel rewarded for their own sake.
  • Make a list of the small and large blessings that we appreciate in our work.

Draw on Personal Strengths.

Our strengths are opportunities for growth. They help us build competence and navigate difficult situations more effectively. When we recognize and use our strengths, we tend to be more engaged, productive, successful, healthier, and happier [58].

As you identify your strengths, take a moment to write a story about being at your best. Reflect on the strengths you drew upon and how they contributed to the experience. Then, explore how we can use these strengths in other areas of daily life to support continued growth and well-being [59].

Appreciating the Journey

Life can be regarded as a journey. Our lives become more meaningful and fulfilling when we develop a sense of purpose and remain open to meaningful and enriching experiences in the present moment. This perspective suggests that we can experience happiness as not only a destination to be reached but also something that can be experienced along the way. In fact, happiness is often already present in our lives—both in the present moment and in the goals we are working toward. It is also important to recognize that happiness often supports success, rather than success being the sole source of happiness [60].  The following exercises are designed to help us uncover greater meaning and appreciation in our lives.

Identify a Meaningful Goal.

A meaningful goal can provide direction, motivation, and a sense of purpose in life. It is important to choose goals that reflect what truly matters to us and support our long-term happiness and well-being. To identify such a goal, we can reflect on the following questions: [56][61]

  • What gives my life meaning?
  • What do I enjoy doing?
  • What are my strengths?

Design a Meaningful Journey.

Once we have identified what we are working toward, we can create a realistic and meaningful path to reach it. The journey itself is important, as the way we pursue our goals can have a strong influence on our happiness and well-being. This journey can be guided by the following steps: [56][61]

  • Step 1: Create a Meaningful Roadmap. Outline key milestones across different time periods. This helps us monitor our progress and set both short-term and long-term goals. A clear roadmap provides direction and keeps us focused on what matters most.

  • Step 2: Include Meaningful Moments. Create meaningful moments each day by taking part in activities and practices that are both enjoyable and important to us. These moments may be simple, such as reading a good book, expressing gratitude, or helping others. Small but meaningful experiences can strengthen our motivation and make the journey more rewarding. [Note: Not every step along the way will feel easy or enjoyable. At times, we may need to delay short-term comfort and work toward long-term growth and fulfillment.]

  • Step 3: Take Meaningful Action. Taking action is what turns goals into results. By focusing on the present moment and valuing the process itself, we can move forward with greater awareness and purpose. Rather than focusing only on the destination, we learn to appreciate each step along the way. Through consistent effort, we gradually turn meaningful goals into meaningful achievements.

Savoring Good Moments

Although life includes both positive and negative events, research suggests that positive daily experiences occur frequently. Paying attention to and appreciating the good things in life can help us prolong and deepen positive experiences, as well as enhance overall happiness. Here are several practical savoring strategies that we can use in our daily lives. [62]

  • Sharing positive experiences with other people
  • Showing our feelings, such as smiling, laughing, or feeling joy
  • Paying attention to how pleasant experiences feel in our body

Positive Thinking

Positive thinking is a practice that focuses on achieving constructive outcomes even in challenging or negative situations. This does not mean ignoring reality or denying difficulties. Rather, it involves acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects of life while choosing to approach situations with a more optimistic and balanced mindset. [63] The following simple exercises are designed to strengthen positive thinking skills by helping us reorganize our thoughts and focus on what is helpful, meaningful, and constructive.

Name Three Good Things in Life.

We often spend time brooding over negative events, as it is a natural tendency that helps us avoid danger and failure. However, we can also balance it by intentionally focusing on positive experiences. For example, we can write down three good things that happened during our day. Then, we can consider what helped make these experiences happen and what we learned or gained from them. [64][65]

Build Optimistic Thinking.

We can sometimes feel stuck and unable to see other possible solutions. Contemplating our best selves can encourage optimism. It can also give us a fresh direction and help us imagine where we want to be in the future. This exercise is an effective tool for career development and self-development, as it encourages us to use our potential creatively and work toward our goals. [57]

Practice Positive Self-talk.

We have a choice in how we respond to our thoughts. This means we can support our personal happiness or stay stuck in unpleasant feelings, regardless of circumstances. When we broaden our thinking in a realistic way, we can see a wider range of possibilities. A worst-case scenario is only one of them. Below are questions that help us think more positively and consider other, better, and more satisfying outcomes. [66]

  • What am I thinking right now?
  • How do I feel  about my thoughts right now?
  • What else can I think instead?
  • What opportunities can I see?
  • How does this new way of thinking affect me?

Peak Experience

Peak experiences are powerful moments of awe, joy, and deep fulfillment that often occur when we are immersed in beauty, meaning, or understanding, such as bonding with loved ones, creative work, religious experience, or appreciation of art and nature [67][68]. They tend to stay with us in memory and can provide lasting strength, inspiration, and well-being, especially during difficult times [69]. The following exercises help us recognize, reflect on, and use these experiences more intentionally.

Identify Three Unforgettable Experiences.

Write down three memorable experiences, either from the recent past or earlier in life. Describe what happened, how you felt, what you were thinking, and any insights or reflections that emerged from the experience.

As you journal about these experiences, reflect on what made them meaningful. They may have evoked positive emotions, deepened self-awareness or understanding, or contributed to personal growth. Some experiences may have felt transformative or so engaging that time seemed to pass unnoticed. [70]

Capture Meaningful Moments Through Outdoor Photography.

Take a moment to capture photos while spending time outdoors or engaging in outdoor activities. Photography can help preserve meaningful moments and encourage us to see our experiences from different perspectives.

As you review your photos, use them as prompts for reflection. Consider what they capture, what you were thinking and feeling at the time, and any insights, discoveries, or new perspectives they bring to mind. Pay particular attention to moments that evoke awe, joy, gratitude, or a deep sense of meaning and fulfillment. [71]

Reflect on Intensely Positive Experiences.

Throughout our lives, we encounter moments of profound joy, wonder, and admiration. These experiences often remind us of the richness of life and create a lasting impact on our thoughts and emotions. Writing provides a meaningful way to preserve and revisit these significant moments.

As you reflect on and record these experiences, consider what you were thinking and feeling at the time. Examine the insights you gained and how the experience deepened your understanding of yourself, others, or the world around you. Finally, reflect on how the experience has shaped your perspective and continues to influence your attitudes, choices, or appreciation of life today. [72]

Integrity and Self-Awareness

Integrity and self-awareness can be understood as the ability to acknowledge, accept, and recognize our feelings and thoughts. As human beings, it is natural for us to experience a wide range of emotions—sometimes we feel hurt, and at other times we feel satisfied or content [56]. We tend to feel more balanced and coherent when we allow ourselves to notice and express these experiences in appropriate and constructive ways [73][74][75]. The following exercises are designed to help us develop and strengthen this capacity.

Observe Our Feelings and Thoughts.

Observing and labeling our feelings and thoughts can be an effective way to reduce the intensity of emotional experiences, particularly during times of distress. Rather than judging emotions as good or bad, we can begin by simply noticing and naming what we are experiencing. This practice promotes greater emotional awareness and creates space between our emotions and our reactions, allowing us to respond more thoughtfully. [76] We may start with simple statements such as:

  • I feel…
  • I feel… so I think…

Ground Ourselves in the Present Moment.

We can sometimes feel overwhelmed by strong emotions and experience difficulty regaining our sense of balance. Grounding techniques are simple practices that help bring our attention back to the present moment and reconnect us with our surroundings. By focusing on what is happening here and now, we can create a sense of calm and stability during stressful situations. The following exercises may help strengthen our ability to manage stress and respond to challenges with greater calm and resilience over time. [77][78]

  • Focus on the taste, texture, and smell of something we are eating.
  • Observe the environment around us by noticing the sights, colors, shapes, and objects within view.
  • Listen carefully to the sounds around us, whether near or far, without judging or analyzing them.
  • Feel our feet firmly on the ground and notice the sensations of contact, pressure, and support beneath us.

Express Our Feelings in a Healthy Way.

During difficult times, expressing our emotions through healthy and constructive outlets can help us process our experiences and reduce emotional distress. Sharing and reflecting on our emotions is an important form of self-care that enables us to better understand our feelings, thoughts, and values. This process can foster greater self-awareness, provide new perspectives, and support resilience, personal growth, and overall well-being. [79][80] Some supportive options include:

  • Writing in a journal is a reflective practice that helps deepen our self-understanding, cultivate positive self-dialogue, and explore the meaning and implications of our current experiences. Through thoughtful reflection, we can gain greater self-awareness, discover new perspectives and possibilities, and support our personal growth and mental well-being. [80][81][82]

  • Talking with  someone we trust and feel safe with—such as a friend, family member, mental health professional, or coach—can be a valuable source of support during difficult times. Sharing what is on our mind in a space wherein we receive care and acceptance can help us feel heard, understood, and supported. Such conversations can provide comfort, strengthen emotional well-being, and help us develop effective ways of coping with challenges. [83][84][85]

Exercise

Physical and mental health are inextricably connected [2]. The World Health Organization (WHO) notes that regular physical activity improves overall health and well-being. In addition to helping prevent noncommunicable diseases, physical activity can reduce symptoms of mental health conditions and support brain function [86]. As the saying goes, health is greater than wealth. To live a happy life, we must take care of both our physical and mental well-being. The following recommendations can help us build a stronger body and mind.

Nurture the Body

We can function well only when we take care of our body. A simple approach includes maintaining a balanced diet, getting enough quality sleep, and doing regular physical activity. This can include moderate aerobic exercise, along with strength, flexibility, and mobility training. Aim for at least five hours of physical activity each week for adults. This supports emotional stability and improves mood, while also allowing the body time to restore and recover. [86][87][88][89][90][91][92]

Nurture the Soul

One important way to care for our souls is to learn how to calm ourselves by being present in the moment. In this regard, mindfulness helps protect us from becoming overwhelmed, reduces the effects of both external and internal stress, and supports emotional balance. Throughout the day, we can strengthen the connection between body and mind by bringing our attention to the present moment while eating, sitting, walking, working, breathing, and even thinking. When practiced consistently, these small moments of awareness can increase our sense of satisfaction, contribute to a happier and more meaningful life, and have a lasting positive impact on our overall well-being. [93][94][95][96][97]

Make Time to Rest

In daily life, we are often busy and focused on achievement, and we may tend to neglect rest, even though it is just as important as sleep. When we feel drained and low in energy, it is our body’s signal that we need to pause our thoughts and activities. At such times, it is helpful to rest and relax through simple practices such as breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, massage, yoga, listening to calming music, laughing, or spending time in nature—such as gardening, sitting under a tree, or watching a sunset. Rest can help us regain energy, improve our functioning, and reduce feelings of tension and burnout, supporting better well-being in the long term. [98][99][100][101][102]

Relationships

Relationships are one of the strongest predictors of happiness. The Harvard study on adult development—one of the world’s longest-running studies—shows that close, supportive relationships are strongly linked to better health and greater happiness [103]. Taken together, these results suggest that meaningful relationships are essential for our long-term well-being and highlight the importance of intentionally nurturing our connections with others. The following practices offer practical ways for us to build and maintain healthy relationships.

Practice Communication with Kindness.

Effective communication and active listening are the foundation of healthy relationships. Communication is more than exchanging information—it is an opportunity to build understanding, connection, and emotional support. We can practice loving-kindness in our relationships by communicating with acceptance, openness, and care. When our loved one shares their thoughts or feelings, give them your full attention, seek to understand their experience, and respond with empathy. These simple acts can strengthen trust, deepen understanding, and nurture meaningful relationships. The following techniques can help us communicate more effectively with our loved ones, both as listeners and speakers. [104][105]

  • A listener's tasks
    • Pay your full attention when your partner speaks.
    • Listen with genuine openness and acceptance to both verbal and nonverbal messages.
    • Reflect back key points and emotions by paraphrasing or summarizing what the other person has shared.
    • Seek to understand their thoughts, feelings, and perspective. Ask for clarification when needed.
  • A speaker's tasks
    • Stay present and grounded through mindful breathing or body sensation.
    • Use 'I'  messages to express thoughts and feelings clearly and honestly.
    • Use kind, respectful, and supportive language.
    • Communicate with empathy, care, and emotional awareness.

Spend Quality Time with Loved Ones.

We can strengthen our relationships by spending quality time with our loved ones. Quality time does not necessarily mean spending a large amount of time together; rather, it is about the quality of the connection we create in the present moment. This connection can be nurtured through simple daily actions such as a gentle touch on the shoulder, a hug, walking together, having meaningful conversations, expressing appreciation, giving compliments, saying “I love you,” or sharing moments of laughter and gratitude. It can also be strengthened through memorable experiences such as traveling, enjoying special outings, celebrating meaningful occasions, or giving thoughtful gifts. By intentionally investing in these moments of connection, we can deepen our relationships and enhance our sense of belonging, happiness, and overall well-being. [106]

Offer Act of Services.

One meaningful way to express care and love is through acts of service. These are supportive actions that help make life easier for those we care about. Acts of service require attention, effort, and intention, and they often communicate love in practical and meaningful ways.

Examples include helping with household tasks, preparing meals, cleaning, running errands, or offering assistance during busy or challenging times. Even small acts of support can strengthen relationships and develop a sense of connection and appreciation. To identify meaningful acts of service, we can:

  • Reflect on recent requests for help or support.
  • Ask our loved ones what kind of assistance they would think most useful.
  • Observe which actions our loved ones value and appreciate most in their daily lives.

As we offer support, it is practical to pay attention to their responses and expressions of gratitude. These reactions can offer insight into what is most meaningful to them and encourage us to continue serving with thoughtfulness. [106]

Conclusion

Happiness is not simply a destination or the absence of problems; it is a lifelong process of learning, growth, connection, and care for both ourselves and others. Research across psychology, neurobiology, and health sciences consistently shows that happiness is closely linked to better physical health, stronger relationships, greater resilience, improved performance, and overall well-being. Importantly, happiness is not reserved for a few fortunate people—it can be cultivated gradually over time through small, consistent daily practices.

Life is sometimes filled with challenges, stress, and uncertainty. Yet even in difficult moments, we can still experience genuine happiness. Through simple practices such as expressing gratitude, caring for our physical health, staying present, maintaining a constructive mindset, and spending meaningful time with loved ones, we can build inner strength and create positive change over time. Happiness does not require a perfect life; rather, it grows through acceptance, purpose, healthy relationships, and the ability to appreciate both ordinary and meaningful moments.

It is important to remember that we can all live more fulfilling lives by strengthening our relationships, staying in the present, and cultivating a clear sense of purpose. This fulfillment deepens when we practice kindness and remain mindful of how our strengths can positively affect others. At the same time, the journey becomes even more meaningful when we pursue our goals with dedication and perseverance while allowing space for moments of joy and gratefulness along the way.

Ultimately, happiness is something we create and nurture every day through our thoughts, actions, relationships, and choices. By taking small and consistent steps toward well-being, we can build a brighter, happier, and greater life—one marked by growth, achievement, and purpose—while making a positive impact on those around us.
